Brunei is a partner country under the AKCMM Project, with methane identified as one of the priority greenhouse gases covered by its NDC (NDC3.0, p15). National methane emissions are concentrated in the energy and waste sectors, particularly in fugitive emissions and solid waste disposal.
Through the AKCMM Project, Brunei focuses on strengthening national technical capacity for methane mitigation, improving the transparency and accuracy of its MRV systems and enhancing stakeholder engagement to support institutional readiness for planning and implementation of methane mitigation measures within a broader decarbonization framework.
The project utilizes methane as a strategic entry point to strengthen Brunei’s GHG mitigation systems across all sectors. By reframing AKCMM outputs to directly support Brunei’s capacity building for GHG mitigation, the initiative adapts the project to national climate priorities. This approach enhances policy coherence, builds engagement with key stakeholders including national knowledge institutions, strengthens GHG MRV systems, ensures sustainable project outputs, and establishes Brunei as a regional case study of “context-driven adaptation” within the AKCMM framework.
