Methane is an increasingly important part of Indonesia’s climate challenge. Emissions outside the forest and land-use (FOLU) sector have increased, driven mainly by waste management, agriculture, and energy activities. According to Indonesia’s First Biennial Transparency Report, non-FOLU greenhouse gas emissions reached about 777 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2022, with methane accounting for nearly a quarter of the total. Reducing methane emissions is therefore critical to supporting Indonesia’s climate commitments and achieving long-term emission reduction goals.

Most emissions come from the waste sector (133,341 ktCO2e), particularly industrial wastewater and municipal solid waste, followed by agriculture sector (86,197 ktCO2e), including rice fields and livestock, and the energy sector (21,813 ktCO2e), mainly from fugitive emissions.

Methane emissions reached approximately 241,455 ktCO2e in 2022 in accordance with Indonesia’s First Biennial Transparency Report, with the following breakdown:
Indonesia has shown strong commitment to reducing methane emissions as part of its climate change mitigation efforts, including through engagement in the Global Methane Pledge (GMP). While progress is being made to align with the national target to reduce emissions, Indonesia's Second Nationally Determined Contributions (SNDC) identifies several challenges remaining in addressing data gaps, limited access to methane mitigation technologies, and policy implementation.
The AKCMM Project supports the Government of Indonesia in strengthening the enabling environment for methane mitigation. This includes improving policies and MRV systems, demonstrating mitigation actions and financing mechanisms, and promoting regional dialogue at the ASEAN level.
Through these efforts, AKCMM aims to accelerate methane mitigation in Indonesia by enhancing policy planning, mobilizing resources, and strengthening the capacity of government institutions and key stakeholders.
