Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR, 6 August 2026 – The Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MoAE), in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), convened a Technical Meeting under the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) Project to advance the design of methane reduction initiatives in Lao PDR.
The meeting reviewed the scope of upcoming feasibility studies and discussed approaches for selecting pilot project that will support methane reduction in the agriculture sector. Building on the outcomes of the first Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting, discussions focused on two shortlisted initiatives: Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) in rice cultivation and Emission Control Blocks (ECB) for cattle and buffalo production.
This gathering provided technical recommendations to refine the draft Terms of Reference, strengthen the feasibility studies, and identify suitable approaches for future pilot implementation. Additionally, it mentioned the project's progress and implementation priorities, while fostering collaboration among key stakeholders to ensure that the proposed interventions are practical, evidence-based, and responsive to national priorities.
The discussion from the meeting will contribute to the finalization of the feasibility studies and inform the selection and implementation of a pilot project, supporting Lao PDR's efforts to reduce methane emissions, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and advance its green growth and climate objectives.
About the project:
The AKCMM Project receives funding from the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF), and aims to reduce methane emissions across ASEAN Member States by strengthening policies, technical capacity, and supporting the development of practical methane reduction solutions. In Lao PDR, the project is being implemented in close collaboration with the Department of Environment with technical support from GGGI Lao PDR.
