GGGI Conducts Site Visit to the Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Laos for Methane Mitigation Studies under the AKCMM Project

Nabong Campus, Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR, 2 July 2026 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), under the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) project, conducted a site visit to the Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Laos (NUOL), at Nabong Campus to gather technical input for methane mitigation studies in Lao PDR’s agriculture sector. 

The AKCMM project supports ASEAN Member States in identifying practical methane-reduction opportunities, with Lao PDR focusing on agriculture-based interventions to generate evidence for future implementation and scale-up. 

The visit was organized to support ongoing feasibility studies and technical assessments of methane mitigation interventions identified under the AKCMM project in Lao PDR. Following the first Project Management Committee meeting, two priority interventions were shortlisted for further assessment: Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) in the rice sector and Emission Control Blocks (ECB) in the livestock sector. 

During the visit, representatives from GGGI and the Faculty of Agriculture exchanged knowledge and observed ongoing research in crop science, animal science, and sustainable agricultural practices. The delegation also visited research facilities, laboratories, and experimental sites to understand better on current academic activities and technical capacities relevant to methane mitigation. 

The visit provided an opportunity to collect technical information and gain insights that will contribute to the ongoing feasibility studies under the AKCMM project. The findings will support the assessment of potential methane-reduction measures and inform future project development in Lao PDR. 

Implemented in partnership with the Department of Environment (DOE), Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE), the AKCMM project aims to support efforts to reduce methane emissions across ASEAN Member States and contribute to sustainable, climate-resilient development.
